5 AI tools actually worth your time as a teacher

Every week brings a new list of "40 AI apps every teacher needs". You do not need forty apps. Most educators get 90 % of the value from a handful of tools used well — and the discipline to ignore the rest. Here are five that earn their place, and what each one is genuinely good at.

1. One general-purpose assistant — pick one, learn it properly

ChatGPT, Claude, Copilot or Gemini: for most teaching tasks, the differences matter less than your skill in using them. A general assistant excels at first drafts: lesson outlines, differentiated versions of an exercise, parent-friendly summaries, quiz questions across difficulty levels. Choose the one your school supports, and invest an hour in learning to write clear instructions — context, audience, format, example. That hour pays for itself within a week.

2. MagicSchool — the teacher-shaped layer

Underrated for the unglamorous tasks that eat evenings: rephrasing a sensitive email to a parent, tightening a newsletter, summarising meeting notes. No new tool to learn, no new account to create — often the safest option under your school's existing agreements.

The one habit that makes any tool safe: never paste a learner's name, photo or identifying details into any AI tool, and verify every fact before it reaches your class. The tool matters less than the habit.

What to ignore (for now)

Anything that promises to grade essays unsupervised, detect AI-written work reliably (no tool does), or replace your judgement about a child. Tools change monthly; those three promises have failed consistently.

How to choose your first tool: three questions

If you are starting from zero, do not compare feature lists — ask three questions instead. First: what does my school already pay for? A licensed tool comes with a data agreement, admin support and colleagues who use it; a marginally "better" tool with none of those loses. Second: what task eats most of my evenings?
